The Rolwaling Valley is true Yeti country – a rarely trekked secluded high valley, shrouded in mystery and the subject of many myths and slightly sinister stories. One of the tales handed down the generations is that the legendary Yeti has made his home here. Indigenous Sherpas also call Rolwaling ‘the grave,’ because the valley is so deeply buried between vertical mountains.
Rolwaling is an isolated and sparsely populated east-west valley near the Tibetan border, west of the Khumbu region and just south of the magnificent Gauri Shankar Himal.
Densely forested, it provides spectacular mountain scenery and possesses an almost eerie quietness and stillness, as well as being endowed with a wealth of varied flora and fauna.
Trekkers who come here will also gain some fascinating insights into the cultures of both the Sherpa and the Tamang people.
The starting point of our trek, Barabise, is a large bazaar in the Bhote Kosi gorge. Our upward climb leads to the scattered white houses of Dolongsa, with its small gomba above.
Next we pass through an enchanting forest, with many rhododendrons and followed by a steep climb to Tinsing La and the convent called Bigu Gomba.
Several hours’ walk beyond Chilangka, trekkers round a ridgeline and enter the Bhote Kosi valley, which has excellent views of the twin peaked Gauri Shankar.
The stone houses of Beding rest on a hill above the small square village gomba, which has an eight four prayer wheel.
Walking on beyond Beding to the summer settlement of Na, we spend a rest day, with a chance to walk further up the valley to see Chobotse, an impressive fluted peak.
