This itinerary adds a dramatic extension to the basic Langtang Valley trek, in which we undertake a challenging hike across the Gyanja La pass, with two nights under canvas in some fairly wild and remote countryside.
Our journey begins with a drive to Syabrubesi, where we stay overnight. Next comes a four-day walk through astonishingly beautiful country with forests of oak, rhododendron and pine, and ancient settlements slotted between. Above the tree-line, the valley widens for fantastic views of Langtang Lirung (7400 m) and then there is a gradual ascent towards Langtang village, the headquarters of the Langtang National Park and the last spot hospitable enough for year-round habitation. The people here are Tibetan speaking pastoral farmers whose lifestyle is unchanged from that of their ancestors who first colonised the valley from Kyirong, Tibet, more than 300 years ago. Before this time Langtang had been regarded as a ‘hidden’ valley.
We move on to Kyangjin, where we have a rest day to look at the gomba and visit the cheese factory. Here there is also an opportunity to admire the higher mountain scenery and to further explore the extensive glacier system.
From Kyanjin Gompa we take a day to hike to the foot of Gyanja-La, where we rest for a night for acclimatisation and to gauge the suitability of the weather. If it is fine enough, we press on upwards next morning to cross the pass, before making a steep descent.
Then we reach our two days of camping in remote terrain, completely away from human settlements. On the third day we reach Sermathang, a beautiful Sherpa village in the Helambu region, where we stay overnight. The next morning we descend to Melamchi Bazaar before the journey back to Kathmandu.
